Hire on Crew

In the past four years, apps and websites made by Crew agencies have been used by tens of millions of people. We’ve helped startups like Snapwire, Caribou and Companion find an application development agency to work with, and before raising a $3.4m seed round, Nucleus turned to Crew to have their app developed.

“My first two attempts at hiring high-quality outsourced help were expensive lessons in the difficulties of managing an outsourced team. Casting about for a better solution, I stumbled across Crew and I submitted a project. Because Crew escrows the funds, I wasn’t worried about losing the money on shoddy work; I would only have to pay once I had approved the work quality.”
– Jonathan Frankel, Founder & CEO of Nucleus

What type of application development agency do you need?

First things first. Before creating your app, you need to determine if you want to build it for iOS, Android, or both. Each option has its benefits, and it’s important to know which platform you should build for. Android holds a greater share of the global market, iOS apps generate more revenue, and hybrid apps are cheaper to build.

As you’ll come to see, we’ve got your back. Here’s a quick breakdown of the benefits of building iOS, Android and hybrid apps.

iOS

As we mentioned, iOS apps win the revenue battle. iOS apps earn 45% more in-app purchases, and iPhone users are more likely to make retail purchases with their phone. Plus, it’s typically less expensive to build for iOS because of the device and screen-size variety that comes with Android. On top of that, it’s been shown that iPhone users are more loyal to their device, and are less likely to jump ship over to Android.

Android

So we know that hiring an application development studio to build an iOS app seems appealing. But while Apple has a firm grip on the premium smartphone market, Android holds over 80% of the global smartphone market. Android-powered devices are the phone of choice in areas such as Africa, South America, and Asia.

Hybrid

Thanks to development tools like Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap) and Rubymotion, creating a hybrid app that works on both iOS and Android devices is relatively simple. Essentially, you would develop a web app that would then be converted to native languages for both platforms.

While that may make hybrids seem like the obvious decisions, the simplicity does limit the ability of the app. Imagine using Google Translate instead of actually learning a language. The main point will translate quite well, but the nuance won’t come through. You’ll get the basic words and phrases, but if you want to translate a novel, good luck. Hybrid apps will work for apps with simple functionality, but native apps are better for any complex functions.
