I hate conferences.
I don’t go to any.
Most reek of people only out for themselves. Only trying to get something from you.
And if they don’t think they can get something from you, they move on.
It’s degrading when someone looks at your name badge and just walks away. I know. It’s happened to me.
About a year ago I saw something called Epicurrence pop in my Twitter feed. Little did I know clicking that link would forever change how I thought about conferences.
As I scrolled through Epicurrence’s beautiful site, I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of.
Epicurrence was billed as an ‘non-conference.’ As a mix of snowboarding, skiing, design, and inspiration all taking place at a cabin in Lake Tahoe. It was meant to be a casual setting for creators to meet. To put it over the top, many of my favorite designers like Tobias van Schneider and Josh Hemsley were going to be there. And to put over the top top, Epicurrence also happens to be hosted by another one of my favorite designers, Dann Petty (you’ve seen his work at companies like Medium and Luxe Valet).
As bad as I wanted to go, I didn’t make it. Mainly because we were in the middle of raising an investment for Crew. But after I saw the pictures from that first event and read the stories, I was damn sure I was going to do everything I could to get to the next one.
A few months later, Epicurrence 2 rolled around and as invites were coming to a close I still didn’t have one. So I booked a flight to San Francisco and tweeted Dann directly to see if he’d be down to meet.
Luckily (and because Dann is one of the nicest people I’ve met) he agreed.
We grabbed coffee, spoke about what we were working on, Epicurrence, but mostly, about our lives.
We didn’t just speak about work. We spoke about things like family and happiness.
One thing I quickly learned about Dann was that he values relationships over everything. It’s enchanting to be around someone who cares about developing a real connection with you rather than just trying to get something from you.
After being fortunate enough to attend Epicurrence 2 last year in Hawaii, I saw how Epicurrence puts relationships first, just like Dann does.
Epicurrence is not about connecting, following, or liking.
Epicurrence is about the long game. About relationships. About friendships.
What drew me to Epicurrence was the real sense of focus on relationships above everything else.
There’s so many bad things we hear about in the world today. And granted, it’s hard not to with our population breaking the 7 billion mark with a billion connecting every day through Facebook.
But Epicurrence is unique in that it represents the good. It’s not meant to be a place to put people’s work down or spread gossip.
If I were to design a conference, I wouldn’t do it any differently than how Dann is.
Our values as a company are to be human and create extreme value. Both Dann and Epicurrence demonstrate these values in spades.
Dann’s always looking out to do the amazing for the people around him. Whether that’s helping you meet inspiring people, hooking you up with some of the best food you’ve ever had, or getting pro surfers to teach you how to surf.
And the setting of the Epicurrence events encourages us to all let our guards down and be human. You can’t help but feel a deeper connection if you fall on your ass trying to ski with Tobias van Schneider or rip your shorts trying to surf in front a bunch of pro surfers (actually happened to me).
Epicurrence is the best event / conference / unconference / nonconference I’ve ever been to.
Now the best part
The reason I’m writing this is because Dann has been kind enough to hook the Crew community up with a 45% discount to the next Epicurrence event Montues.com — design + snowboarding/ski/hangout event in Lake Tahoe on March 6.
The ticket is normally $1799 USD. We’re getting a limited number at 45% off ($999).
There’s 10 spots available.
This event package comes with:
- lodging in an Airbnb near Northstar with roommates
- Breakfast and Dinner with everyone
- 2 Day lift tickets for Northstar to ski/snowboard
- Access to all the discussions and media
- Some EPIC swag
If you’re interested, we need to let Dann know by Thursday Feb. 18 at 11pm EST.
I’ll be there too, along with my wife and co-founder Steph, and we’d love to meet you.
I know timing is tight but if you can swing it, you won’t regret it.
And P.S. – Please keep this under raps because this is just for you and members of the Crew community.
