What type of freelance app developer do you need?

Before you hire anybody, you have a big decision to make: iOS or Android? Both have their benefits. iOS apps generate 85% more revenue than Android, but Android proudly holds 80% or the global smartphone market share.

And like any great life decision, there’s a curveball: hybrid apps. But, as you’ll come to know, Crew has got your back. We’ve broken down each option and their benefits.

When it comes to the almighty dollar, iOS apps are the undisputed winner. They earn 45% more in-app purchases, and users are more likely to make retail purchases with their device. Plus, building the actual app is often less expensive, due to the wide variety of Android devices that you would need to design for.

Beyond the financial advantages, studies have shown that iPhone users are more loyal to the brand and are less likely to switch devices than Android users.

Hiring a freelance iOS app developer is probably pretty intriguing right now. But even though Apple owns the premium smartphone market, Android has the rest of the world in its corner. By going after mass adoption, Android has earned the trust of users in areas including South America, Africa, and Asia.

On top of that, Google Play is known to be less-strict with approving apps, so it’s typically easier to get your app into their store.

And then we have our aforementioned curveball, the hybrid app. Building a hybrid allows you to use tools like Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap) and Rubymotion to create one app that works for both iOS and Android devices. While that may make hybrids seem like a no-brainer, what you gain in convenience, you lose in ability.

These tools make it relatively easy to build products for both iOS and Android, and to do so quickly, but here’s an analogy to cover the drawbacks. Imagine using Google Translate instead of actually learning a language. The main point will translate quite well, but the nuance won’t come through. You’ll get the basic words and phrases, but if you want to translate a novel, good luck. Hybrid apps will work for apps with simple functionality, but native apps are better for any complex functions.
