Building an online store? Creating your site with content management systems (CMS) like Bigcommerce allows you to build your site without writing a single line of code. Pick a template, hit publish, and bam: you’re store is live.

But your business doesn’t fit into a template, so why should your website? A freelance Bigcommerce developer can take a theme and turn it into a fully customized online store, without breaking the bank.

Is a freelance Bigcommerce developer the right choice for your business?

The different e-commerce platforms have a lot of overlapping features, and each comes with its own unique benefits. Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons for Bigcommerce, Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento.

Bigcommerce

The Bigcommerce platform offers a wide variety of themes that are easy to setup and maintain with a freelance Bigcommerce developer, and can be used track inventory, process payments, and offer discount codes. They have four different plan options, and plans above the starter plan feature no transaction fees, which will definitely save you some money.

It’s a solid system for business that aren’t yet at an enterprise level, with prices of $29.95, $79.95 and $199.95/month for their Silver, Gold and Platinum plans, respectively. While they do offer enterprise plans, if you process over 3,000 orders or $125k in sales per year, you may pay $900-1,500 per month.

Magento

One of, if not the most robust ecommerce platform out there, Magento has over 5000 free and paid apps and app-ons available. Powered by its open source community, it’s entirely free to use, and premium themes start for as little as a $1. The main expense you’ll face is hosting, which you’ll need to set up separately from your store.

When it comes to building a fully customized and unique online shopping experience, Magento really is a heavyweight amongst featherweights. It does require a tech-savvy owner or developer to set everything up and build the store, but the power of the platform makes Magento stand apart.

Shopify

Likely the most popular ecommerce platform today, and for good reason. Shopify works for the smallest of businesses as well as established retailers of all sizes, with loads of features, super simple and customizable themes, great pricing and unmatched customer support. Like we said, there’s good reason Shopify is quickly becoming the go-to for online stores.

Their plans range from as low as $9/month, up to $299 per month. The Lite plan includes Facebook selling capabilities, POS integration, shippings codes and one staff account, while the Advanced account includes preferred credit card rates, advanced report building, real-time shipping updates, and 15 staff accounts. There are also Basic and Pro options in between those two account types, offering plenty of features based on your business’ needs.

One downside with Shopify is that you aren’t able to set up discount codes with their starter plan.

WooCommerce

This platform is actually a plugin, allowing you to turn your existing WordPress-powered website into a full-fledged online store. It helps you manage inventory, process payments, shopping, and more. It works equally well for brand new and existing websites, and powers over 39% of all online shops.

WooCommerce is for the more tech-savvy shop owners, as you’ll need to buy a domain and hosting prior to building your site using a WordPress theme.
