When it comes to creating a website, there are two main options. Build from scratch, or build using a content management system (CMS). Using a CMS allows you create a website without needing to write a single line of code. Simply pick a template, hit publish, and there you have it: a shiny new website.

While CMS platforms like WordPress start you off with a template, a freelance WordPress designer can customize the site and create something tailor-made for your business, without breaking the bank.

Not sure if WordPress is the best CMS for your website? Here are a few other popular CMS tools:

  • Shopify – For building an online store
  • Tumblr – For portfolios and sharing visual content
  • Squarespace – For marketing websites

Over the past 4 years, our network of freelance designers, developers and studios have created websites and apps used by millions. Startups like Blubel, Zipbooks and Companion turned to Crew to make websites that stand out from the masses, and we helped Eventbrite update their web app that’s done over $1.5 billion in ticket sales. When blogger and Venture Capitalist Om Malik needed a new home for his writing and photography, he knew where to come.

“I’ve worked with a lot of designers and there’s often a lot of drama. Things don’t get done on time, etc… But Brian just nailed it. He’s been very good at making everything work for me and just everything is amazing.”
— Om Malik

Should you hire a freelance WordPress designer, or build from scratch?

While websites created on CMSs have incredible versatility and can be a great way to build your site, they aren’t always the best solution. Here are a few pros and cons of building your website with a template vs. building from scratch.

Pros of building your website with WordPress

Building a website with a CMS like WordPress is a great option. It has many pre-built features, meaning you won’t have put a huge budget towards developing those elements. On top of that, a freelance WordPress designer can customize the design, so your website will look totally custom-made.

Ultimately, the main benefits of creating your site with a CMS is that they can be made faster, and cheaper.

Much of our site is actually built on WordPress, and Om Malik, who we mentioned earlier, also used WordPress to build his website. And as you can see, it’s pretty damn sharp.

Cons of building your website with WordPress

When you use a platform like WordPress, what you save money and time, you lose in flexibility.
Website building tools are always improving and become more robust, but you may reach a point where what you need just isn’t available from a CMS.

Case in point: Groupon. The daily-deal website was initially built on WordPress, but they did eventually need to switch over to a fully custom site to meet their needs.

Think about where you see your idea now and where you want it to go.

If you’re testing your idea with customers or have a limited budget, a tool like WordPress can be a great option.

That said, it’s important to keep the limitations in mind. The features you want to add to your site down the line may not be available in a CMS, but it may be good to test your initial concept. Then, once you know you’re onto something, you can invest more resources into a custom website.
